The opening

Something is alive beneath your feet right now.

Not in a metaphorical sense. Not in the poetic way people say the earth is alive when they mean it feels warm or ancient or sacred. Literally, biologically, teeming-with-life alive. As you go about your day — walking across a lawn, driving over a field, standing in a garden — there is a civilization of almost incomprehensible complexity operating mere inches below the surface. A civilization older than anything humans have ever built. A civilization that, in a very real sense, built us.

And we are destroying it. Not slowly. Not gently. At a pace that geologists and ecologists describe with words usually reserved for catastrophes. Strip-mining the invisible. Erasing what we never took the trouble to understand.

Here is the number that tends to stop people cold: a single teaspoon of healthy soil contains more living microorganisms than there are human beings on the entire surface of this planet. One teaspoon. Roughly five grams of dark, damp earth, the kind you might brush off your shoe without a second thought. Inside it: bacteria in the hundreds of millions, fungi threading through the particles like pale wire, protozoa hunting and being hunted, nematodes coiling through micro-caverns, mites and springtails navigating a world of mineral grains that must look, to them, like a mountain range.

This is not a comforting story. But it is one of the most important stories you will ever hear. Because the fate of that hidden empire — the one beneath every step you take — is entangled with the fate of every civilization that has ever risen, and every one that has ever fallen. Including ours.

Welcome to the underground.
