The opening

Picture this. You're sitting at your kitchen table on a Tuesday morning, coffee in hand, and you decide to book a flight to visit your parents for the holidays. You find a fare that looks reasonable — say, three hundred and forty-two dollars — and you think, okay, let me just check one more site before I commit. You open a new tab, come back to the same airline, same route, same dates. The price is now three hundred and seventy-nine dollars. You blink. You haven't moved. You haven't told anyone. Thirty-seven dollars evaporated in the time it took you to open a browser tab.

This is not a glitch. This is not a mistake. This is the economy working exactly as it was designed to work — just not in the way most of us were taught to understand it.

We grew up with a mental model of price that feels almost medieval in its simplicity. A thing has a value. That value gets expressed as a number. You pay the number, you get the thing. Maybe you haggle a little at a flea market, but fundamentally, prices feel like facts — stable, neutral, objective. Yet over the past three decades, something profound has happened to the way prices are set, and most of us have barely noticed. The invisible hand that Adam Smith described — that elegant metaphor for how markets coordinate supply and demand — has been replaced, across enormous swaths of the economy, by something far more literal: algorithms. Invisible machines, running on servers we'll never see, making billions of decisions every day about what we pay for the world around us.

Today, we're going to pull back the curtain on that system. We'll trace how it began, where it lives now, who it serves, and what it quietly takes from the rest of us. By the end, you'll never look at a price tag quite the same way again.
