The opening

Imagine you are standing in a cave in the Caucasus Mountains, somewhere in what is now the Republic of Georgia, about thirty-four thousand years ago. Outside, the world is cold and indifferent. Inside, someone is doing something that will quietly reshape every civilization that follows. They are twisting fibers โ€” thin strands of wild flax โ€” between their fingers, pulling them taut, letting them spiral around each other into something stronger than any single strand alone. They are not writing history. They are not building cities. They are not minting coins. But what they are doing matters just as much, maybe more, than any of those things. They are making thread.

We tend to think of the great levers of history as dramatic and visible โ€” battles, revolutions, the rise and fall of empires, the names of kings carved into stone. But running beneath all of it, quite literally woven through the whole human story, is something far more humble and far more essential. Cloth. Textile. Fiber twisted into thread, thread passed over and under and through itself into fabric, fabric cut and stitched into the garments that covered our bodies, the sails that moved our ships, the bags that carried our grain, the banners that named our nations.

The story of textiles is not a footnote to history. It is the hidden loom on which history itself was woven. Long before the first alphabet, before the first city, before the first coin changed hands in a marketplace, humans were spinning and weaving. And the technologies, trade networks, economic systems, and political structures that grew up around cloth shaped virtually every civilization on earth.
